5 flavors of Dumb is about a girl named Valerie who becomes a manager of a band because she had to run her mouth. More like her hands, since she’s deaf. Valerie is struggling - struggling to keep the band together, struggling to keep her family together, and to find herself. When Valerie finds out what her parents did to pay for her little sister's surgery, Valerie gets mad. More than mad, she’s furious. Furious at her mom, furious at her dad; more at her dad though. Valerie feels like her dad just doesn’t care about her, and that her hates her being deaf even though Valerie can’t help it. Keeping the band together is harder than Valerie thought, what’s even harder though is trying to get them a gig. No one wants them to plan, because they don’t sound very good. The band is hauling around a dead weight who can’t keep up with the music even though she’s become the face of the band (Kallie Sims). As the story goes on Valerie begins to find who she is, finds love, finds friendship, and finds the real “sound,” of the band.

Piper is deaf. I was pretty sure her name was Piper. Piper becomes the manager of the local high school garage band. People keep saying "yo dawg, dat cray, she can't hear nuttin'." The manager doesn't need to hear, he/she just needs to be able to get the band noticed and get plenty of money out of it. Besides, it isn't like Piper took the job because of her "love for the music," she took it because her parents drained her college fund for her little sister's cochlear implant, and she needed the money to go to some fancy college in D.C. called Gallaudet or something, because it has deaf programs. So Piper gets in fights with a bunch of people, family, friends, etc., then saves the day, everybody happy, the end. I'd like to point out that she dyes her hair pink as some kind of rebellious gesture to her parents.
